St. Lucia is an island in the Caribbean full of lush, tropical beauty, from stoic mountains to massive waterfalls. Travelers can choose to dive into the reefs off the volcanic beaches or spend their days fishing and hiking.

Last month was St. Lucia's 40th Independence, and the island celebrated proudly. The island is also proud of the literary legacy left behind by Sir Derek Walcott. Marigot Bay Resort & Marina points out why this man, who passed away two years ago, won the Nobel Prize.

There is no question Sir Derek Walcott had a strong passion for the Caribbean and specifically for his island of St. Lucia. The Swedish Academy even mentioned he was chosen for the Nobel Prize due to his strong regional voice that showed through his work.

This man had a love of writing since childhood. He published his very first poem at the age of 14 and never looked back. By the time he was awarded this prize, he already had published two dozen poetry anthologies and just as many plays.

His words spoke boldly through his work, showing how fond he was of his home island in the Caribbean.
