The beauty of art is all around us as we travel.

In addition to learning new cultures and finding art throughout a new city, the hotel lobbies are one place where you can always find some tantalizing pieces of artwork.

Alohilani Resort Waikiki Beach knows the power art can have. The chic-coral inspired sculpture that greets guests in the lobby is a perfect example of how a little can go a long way.

Created by renowned New York sculptural illustrator Nina Helms, the "Makai" is simple yet elegant. It captivates guests as they step into the resort, ready to check into a tropical paradise.

"Makai" is Hawaiian for "ocean", which is a fitting name for the work of art in the lobby of a beach resort.

The stunning coral look sculpture is 37 feet wide and 20 feet high. It goes across the entire back wall of the lobby.

It's a can't miss for guests and because of its beauty, it can easily set the mode for the entire vacation-which is what Nina was hoping for when she created it.

"I wanted people looking at it to be transported to a place that is a little outside of everyday reality," Nina said.

"It's one of the first things that people interact with when they come to this beautiful resort, and I wanted it to be a happy experience. Viewers get a sense of peace and spirit when they see my sculptures. It's a time of quietude even in what can be a busy place."

While some coral like sculptures are made of plaster, "Makai" is made up of a more durable resin material because plaster likely would've broken during the transfer to Hawaii.

The "Makai" sculpture took around six months to make, is made up of 34 separate pieces and took a team of five people about a week to install it in the lobby.

Definitely have your camera ready as you enter the resort because "Makai" makes for spectacular pictures.
