Among the numerous highlights at the Xcaret eco-archaeological park are the mysterious, majestic Underground Rivers - a must-visit attraction when staying at the Riviera Maya hotspots of Cancun and Playa del Carmen.

Part of an enormous cave system underneath the Yucatan peninsula, the rivers provide guests with a pleasant, current-assisted ride with occasional exits that let in warming sun rays. Mostly snorkel-friendly, underwater explorers will see unique rock formations and marine fossils.

Blue River is recommended for visitors without children who are relatively strong swimmers and in good physical condition - one must use a rope to exit at the end. A mostly open waterway, Manatee River is ideal for seniors and children, but they must know how to swim. Most of Maya River is underground and it's also the calmest of the rivers. This one is fine for seniors and kids who can't swim. A bit different from the rest, Paradise River is enjoyed via a raft, offering unique scenery and plenty of wildlife.
