After smashing tourism records last year, Greater Fort Lauderdale, Fla., is on track to do it again. When the numbers are totaled for 2014, it is estimated that 14 million visitors will have come to the fun-in-the-sun destination.
“Over the past four years, we have witnessed an unprecedented 56 months of consecutive tourism growth, with a record-breaking 13.4 million visitors spending $10.6 billion in the past year alone,” says Nicki E. Grossman, president of the Greater Fort Lauderdale Convention and Visitors Bureau. “The sky truly is the limit for Greater Fort Lauderdale’s potential visitation. Our numbers just keep on going up, up, up.”
To meet the rising demand, the airport is expanding — the new South Runway recently opened at FLL — and several new hotels will open within the next two years. What’s more, existing hotels are undergoing renovations and launching new services, while a few significant rebrandings have taken place. Following is the latest hotel news from Greater Fort Lauderdale.
Slated to open in the summer of 2015, the Margaritaville Hollywood Beach Resort is located on the famed Hollywood Beach Boardwalk — a two-and-a-half-mile oceanfront promenade. The $147 million, 349-room resort is inspired by the lyrics and lifestyle of Jimmy Buffett, featuring a tropical vibe and such food-and-beverage venues as Jimmy Buffett’s Margaritaville, LandShark Bar & Grill, License to Chill Rooftop Bar, the Lone Palm Bar and the 5 O’Clock Somewhere Bar, as well as JWB’s, an upscale dining restaurant. In addition, the 17-story oceanfront property will feature an extensive water recreation area with multiple pools and two FlowRider wave simulators overlooking the Boardwalk; the 15,000-square-foot St. Somewhere Spa; an oceanfront fitness center; family and children’s programming; entertainment venues; shopping outlets; and more than 27,000 square feet of function space.
The management team for the property was recently announced, and it includes Cate Farmer, general manager, who most recently served as general manager of Mondrian at Baha Mar in Nassau, Bahamas; and Manny Corral, director of sales and marketing, most recently with Starwood Hotels & Resorts. Group reservations are now being accepted. www.margaritavillehollywoodbeachresort.com; 954-874-4444
The new Conrad Fort Lauderdale Resort and Residences is scheduled to open in summer 2015. The 290-room property occupies a prime two-acre block on Fort Lauderdale Beach Boulevard, in the spot that once was slated to be the never-opened Trump International hotel.
Before opening next year, the 24-story oceanfront property will have undergone a $34 million renovation. It will include a state-of-the-art fitness center, a Conrad spa, an exclusive oceanfront dining experience, a beach concierge, an elevated pool deck oasis with a swimming pool, poolside restaurant and bar and gourmet market. Originally designed by renowned architect Michael Graves, the property is being updated with new architectural and design features. The East Tower will be fully residential, while the remaining residences will operate as condo-hotel units, with studios and suites featuring balconies with ocean views as well as kitchenettes.
The new property will be the fifth Conrad hotel in the U.S., and the first Conrad resort in North America, joining Hilton’s luxury brand of 23 properties worldwide. www.conradhotels.com (Hotel reservations are not yet being accepted.)
After being acquired by Thayer Lodging Group in September, the Westin Diplomat Resort & Spa in Hollywood, Fla., is being renamed the Diplomat Resort & Spa. Late last month, it became part of Hilton Worldwide’s newest brand, Curio – A Collection by Hilton. Later this year, Thayer will embark on a $100 million enhancement initiative for the oceanfront property. The hotel remains open and fully operational, and will continue to conduct business as usual during the transition. All existing guest reservations will be honored. www.diplomatresort.com
With 998 rooms and suites, numerous restaurants and a spa, along with more than 200,000 square feet of meeting and convention space, the Diplomat is one of the largest hotels in South Florida, with a history dating back to 1959, when the original Diplomat opened on the current site. It will join the recently launched Curio brand, Hilton’s global collection of distinctive four- to five-star hotels. www.curiocollection.com
The Hilton Fort Lauderdale Beach Resort— a 25-story, all-suite flagship luxury residential resort located on North Fort Lauderdale Boulevard — is opening a new rooftop lounge, as well as a new indoor/outdoor reception and lounge area. Slated to open sometime in 2015, the Skybar rooftop lounge, on the 27th floor, will be an indoor/outdoor nightclub, with a VIP bottle-service, ultra-lounge feel. The Hilton partnered with The Restaurant People — the group behind the hotel’s much-lauded S3 Restaurant — to develop Skybar.
A new fourth-floor reception and lounge space with an al fresco balcony overlooking the ocean will debut at the Hilton Fort Lauderdale Beach Resort in November. Not only will the 4,500-square-foot, indoor/outdoor space accommodate group bookings of up to 300 guests, but it will also be open exclusively to hotel guests during the day as a lounge, and will open up to locals for happy hour in the early evening. The only hotel in the Americas to utilize wind turbines, which were installed last year, the Hilton also now offers a Sustainability Property Tour so guests can learn more about the hotel’s environmentally friendly initiatives. www.fortlauderdalebeachresort.hilton.com or 800-445-8667

The cabanas, which can be rented for the day, feature retractable curtains, an outdoor beach bed for sunbathing, sofa, table, cable TV, and a mini-fridge stocked with soft drinks and waters.
Each cabana is individually decorated through a partnership with a charitable cause, which receives a portion of the proceeds from each rental.
