Scaling Up
Luxury hotel brands are expanding with new upscale properties worldwide.

Starwood’s Luxury Collection will debut four hotels this year, in Ajman, United Arab Emirates; Odessa, Ukraine; Dalian, China; and Broumana, Lebanon. St. Regis, also a Starwood brand, will open properties in Istanbul and Chengdu, China. The Ritz-Carlton Hotel Company will unveil hotels in Kyoto, Japan; Bali; and Rancho Mirage, Calif., this year.
Rosewood, which last year announced a complete rebranding, has embarked on an expansion designed to double its portfolio within five years in new global markets, with a particular focus on Europe and Asia. This year, the brand will open hotels in Beijing, Saudi Arabia’s Riyadh and the Bahamas.
Here’s a look at the expansion plans being implement by U.S.-based luxury hotel brands.
Capella Hotels and Resorts
Last spring, Capella Hotels and Resorts’ opened the 49-room Capella Washington, D.C., which is set along the picturesque C&O Canal in Georgetown. Rooms and suites feature generous living and workspaces, plush furniture, modern amenities and technology. Guests have access to Capella’s signature personal assistants 24/7; complimentary refreshment center; complimentary laundry pressing service of up to five pieces; and complimentary Wi-Fi. Special guest services include private after-hours shopping in the District’s stores and access to Washington’s new and hot attractions.
The Capella Bahia Maroma in Riviera Maya, Mexico, is set to open next year, with villas opening directly onto the ocean. It will house a golf course with three holes seaside, a spa, a beach club and gourmet restaurants. Visit ww.capellahotels.coms.
Edition
The Edition brand, a collaboration between Marriott and Ian Schrager, was originally slated to open 100 hotels within a 10-year time frame. Those plans were substantially scaled back, at least in part because of the recession. Earlier this year, Marriott International sold three Edition hotels in London, Miami Beach and Manhattan to the Abu Dhabi Investment Authority. The purchase price was $815 million.
The London Edition opened in September, the Miami Beach Edition is slated to open in the second half of this year and the Manhattan property will debut next year in the Clock Tower building at 5 Madison Avenue. New York City will get another Edition hotel, which will open in Times Square in 2017. Both the Clock Tower and the Times Square hotels will be managed by Marriott International. Hyatt Andaz
The Andaz Maui at Wailea and Andaz Peninsula Papagayo in Costa Rica opened in the fourth quarter of last year. The Maui property was the first Andaz to debut in a resort destination. Set on 15 acres of beachfront property, the Andaz Maui at Wailea features 297 rooms and suites, a spa with adults-only pool and 15,000 square feet of meeting space.
The property also has two restaurants, including Morimoto Maui, opened by Iron Chef Masaharu Morimoto. The menu marries traditional Japanese culinary techniques with Hawaiian ingredients. The restaurant will offer outdoor, beachside seating, as well as indoor dining.
Andaz Peninsula Papagayo, in northwest Costa Rica’s Guanacaste region, is the 11th in the Andaz brand. Situated on 28 oceanfront acres, Andaz Peninsula Papagayo features 153 guestrooms, including 21 luxury suites and 8,200 feet of meetings space. The property offers a variety of dining options, including three restaurants. The property also boasts an 11,000-foot spa and a gym that is open 24/7. Visit www.andaz.hyatt.com.
The Luxury Collection
The Luxury Collection, a Starwood brand, will open four hotels this year in Ajman, United Arab Emirates; Odessa, Ukraine; Dalian, China; and Broumana, Lebanon. It will also reopen the Hotel Imperial in Vienna following a one-year renovation of its ground floor.
The 205-room Ajman Saray, which opened last month, is the first Luxury Collection beach resort in the Middle East. Located on an unspoiled stretch of the Ajman coast, the hotel offers a variety of water sports, meetings space, a gym and spa experience as well as a kids club.
The March 1 opening of the 112-room Hotel Bristol marks the brand’s entry into Ukraine. Built in 1898, across the street from the Philharmonic Theater in Odessa, it is the only luxury hotel in the city center. The property boasts a restaurant, a bar, indoor pool area, spa and fitness center, and 10,000 square feet of meetings space.
The Castle Hotel in Dalian, scheduled to open in June, features a German-inspired castle design reconstructed from the Dalian Shell Museum. The property houses 292 guestrooms and suites and 67 apartments, three restaurants and a lobby lounge.
Grand Hills, a resort in Broumana, is slated to debut in the fourth quarter of this year. It is located east of Beirut and overlooks Lebanon’s capital city and the Mediterranean. It will feature 115 rooms and 53 suites, as well as three restaurants and two bars.
The Hotel Imperial in Vienna will reopen with new concepts for the restaurant, bar and café. The existing entrance connecting the hotel to the neighboring Musikverein concert hall will be restored. The property was originally built in 1863 as a private residence of Prince Philipp of Württemberg before it was converted into the Hotel Imperial in 1873. Visit www.starwoodhotels.com/luxury.
Ritz-Carlton
The Ritz-Carlton Hotel Company is opening new properties in Kyoto, Japan; Bali; and Rancho Mirage, Calif., this year. The first to make its debut is the 136-room Ritz-Carlton, Kyoto, which opened in February. The property features four dining options, meetings space and a spa.
The Ritz-Carlton, Bali will open its doors this summer, with 313 rooms that include 90 suites and 14 villas. The property will house six restaurants and bars, including a cliffside restaurant set in a natural cave that doubles as a private dining room. Other restaurants include a beach grill, an Indonesian restaurant, a Japanese bar and restaurant, and a pool bar. The Nusa Dua property will also have a spa and a water sports pavilion.
A Ritz-Carlton Reserve will open in Ubud, Bali, late in the year. It is the company’s third Reserve property, joining Phulay Bay, Thailand, and Dorado Beach, Puerto Rico. The property will have 60 villas and suites. Dedicated butlers will personalize virtually every detail of guests’ stays.
The Ritz-Carlton, Rancho Mirage will offer a luxury desert experience from its setting atop a bluff overlooking Palm Springs, the Coachella Valley and the San Jacinto Mountains. No further information on the resort was available at press time. Visit www.ritzcarlton.com.
Rosewood Hotels & Resorts
Last September, Rosewood Hotels & Resorts unveiled a complete rebranding, which encompassed everything from brick-and-mortar design to a new website, new collateral, and new hotel programming.
Following the brand revamp, the company opened Rosewood London in October, marking the debut of the Rosewood brand in Europe as part of its global expansion.
The company also announced that it will manage the Hôtel de Crillon in Paris. That announcement was followed by news that designer Karl Lagerfeld has been commissioned to design two suites for the famed hotel, which is currently undergoing a complete restoration. It will reopen next year.

St. Regis
This upscale Starwood brand is set to open the St. Regis Chengdu in China on May 1 in the heart of Chengdu’s business district. Its 278 rooms and suites will be equipped with such tech amenities as iPad-controlled in-room devices, and St. Regis signature butler service will be offered for all rooms. The hotel will feature five dining options; a Sky bar; Decanter, which will be the only wine authority in Chengdu; and generous meeting space.
This fall, the St. Regis Istanbul will mark the debut of the brand in Turkey and will be Starwood’s 11th hotel in the country. The newbuild hotel will have 118 rooms and four suites. W Hotels
In December, W Hotels made its debut in Switzerland with the opening of the ski-in and ski-out W Verbier, its first alpine and ski resort. Four traditional Swiss wooden chalets are connected by a glass atrium. Fireplaces are situated throughout the public spaces and are a key feature in each of the hotel’s 123 rooms and suites. All guestrooms and suites have balconies, many with mountain views.
Set to open this summer, the 340-room W Beijing is close to the Forbidden City, Silk Market and Tiananmen Square. It will feature 340 rooms and suites.
The W Bogota in Colombia, slated to debut in the fall, will be a part of a larger mixed-use development. Its 168 guestrooms will include 20 suites and one Wow Suite, the W brand’s interpretation of the Presidential suite.
