Before And After
Help your clients make the most of their vacations with pre- and post-cruise stays in Florence and Venice

When your clients are cruising out of the perennially popular homeport of Venice, be sure to recommend land stays before or after their voyages so they can make the most out of their vacations. For a more intensive taste of Italy, you may also want to recommend that they fly into Florence first and spend a few days there. Then they can easily take the two-hour Rail Europe train ride (www.raileurope.com) to Venice.
Here are three properties you should consider recommending.
FLORENCE
Il Salviatino
Located 15 minutes outside of Florence’s city center, Il Salviatino is a 15th-century villa that underwent a significant renovation in 2007. The facelift added an array of luxurious, modern amenities that blend nicely with restored frescoes, furnishings and original artwork to the former home of the Salviati family.
The property, set on 12 acres that offer views of Florence from the hillside of Fiesole, features a spa, a wood-paneled library, a two-tiered swimming pool and La Cucina, a fine-dining restaurant. A complimentary shuttle transports guests back and forth from Florence, just a block from the Duomo.
Il Salviatino’s 45 guestrooms and suites boast their own décor and vary in size and shape. Historic and artistic touches include original wood paneling, oversized marble fireplaces, sculptures and frescoes. Guestroom amenities include free Wi-Fi, air-conditioning, Tuscan linen bedding, sit-down rain showers, Nespresso coffee machines, safes, plasma TVs, complimentary mineral water and private balconies in select accommodations. The property is a member of Preferred Hotels & Resorts.
Weather permitting, meals are served on the outside terrace with views of Florence. Breakfast is included in room rates. Recommend that your clients dine at La Cucina to enjoy its seasonal menus, which capitalize on the property’s onsite organic garden.
The hotel will reopen April 6. For more information, visit salviatino.com.
Mercure Firenze Centro
The 85-room property’s strongest selling point is its location in Florence, just minutes away from the Santa Maria Novella train station and within walking distance of the Mercato Centrale for shopping and dining. An extremely walkable city, Florence features plenty of other main sites – including the Duomo, Piazza della Signoria and the Palazzo Vecchio – which are just a bit farther away.
The hotel opened in 2015 and offers spacious and clean rooms with air-conditioning, minibar, safe, tea/coffee-makers, complimentary WiFi and TVs. Some guestrooms have balconies. The hotel’s four suites are an especially good choice for families and are equipped with king-size beds and sofa beds in separate rooms. Three suites include two bathrooms.
A large breakfast room serves up an extensive daily buffet breakfast for an additional $15. The Apollo Lounge Bar in the lobby features drinks and a menu of snacks, pasta, salads, salamis, cheeses, fruit salad and cakes.

VENICE
Best Western Hotel Olimpia
Much like the Mercure Firenze Centro, one of the Best Western Hotel Olimpia’s strongest selling points is its location. The property is in close proximity to Venice’s Santa Lucia Train Station as well as the cruise ship port. It offers a package featuring accommodations, a welcome drink, free WiFi and luggage storage so that guests can check out early and explore the city before boarding their ships.
The recently renovated property fronts a canal and exudes a European ambiance. It is equipped with guestrooms whose amenities include air-conditioning, minibars, hairdryers, safes, satellite televisions, data ports and tea/coffee-makers on request.
A breakfast buffet, which is often included in packages, can also be purchased at a minimal cost. It features not only an abundance of the usual breakfast offerings but also such surprise treats as pizza and an assortment of fresh cakes and pastries. Wall-to-wall windows, including some that look out onto a lovely large back garden, fill the breakfast room with light.
The welcoming staff can easily arrange and negotiate a rate for the short transfer to the port. Piazzale Roma, the hub for airport buses and taxis, is also where guests can hail water vaporetti that transport them to the Rialto Bridge and St. Mark’s Square for sightseeing.
