Tuning into Travel: A Radio Guy Turns Travel Agent
With the help of CruiseOne, Chris Caulfield successfully transitioned from a radio career to one in travel.

Name: Chris Caulfield
Agency name and location: Chris Caulfield, CruiseOne, Croton-on-Hudson, N.Y.
Franchisor: CruiseOne
My former career: Radio production
Why I chose a travel career: The time had come to make a change in careers. I wanted to work for myself and began to look at different opportunities. I have always enjoyed taking cruises and traveling with my family, so I decided to join the CruiseOne franchise. I had loved working in radio, and this would let me work in another career doing something I loved.
Why I chose my franchise network: I looked at a few travel franchisors and felt CruiseOne was the best fit. They gave the impression that their goal was to support and grow my business through various programs, which have increased since I joined the network. I believed they were upfront about the business.
My biggest challenge starting out: Finding clients and letting people know that travel agents are still around.
How I solved it: Getting out in my community. I am involved in my chamber of commerce and participate in many local events every year. Social media is also a big part of my marketing. Instagram has worked best for me.
My greatest challenge right now: I think staying organized and maintaining a balance is my biggest challenge right now. As the business grows there is a balance between servicing existing clients but at the same time still adding new ones.
What I like best about the travel business: Every day is different, since every trip is different. This keeps things fresh and exciting.
What I hate about it: People who do not understand the value of a travel professional. They believe they can get their vacation cheaper doing it themselves and there is no convincing some of them otherwise.
How my former career has helped me run my own travel business: Part of my last career was creating radio programs and commercials. I am able to use those skills to market my travel agency business. Also, for the past few years in radio, I worked remotely, which was perfect training to work at home as part of CruiseOne.
Why I love what I do: I am in control of my career and get to benefit from my hard work. The CruiseOne network has been fantastic in terms of training and support—and not just from the headquarters team. I have made many new friends, and my fellow franchisees happily offer advice or support.
