WHAT TO DO IN PANAMA:

CULTURE

Through time, the Panamanian identity was forged in a great encounter of races and cultures; Spaniards, Amerindians, Africans, Afro-Antilleans and people from many countries found in the Isthmus the best harmony, peace and tolerance that will swell life.

The Hispanic heritage beats especially in the regions of Azuero and Coclé where tradition and culture is highly valued. The African legacy dazzles in the showy Congo dances, a tradition settled in the province of Colon, while the native peoples keep alive their roots.

Penonomé
Penonomé, surrounded by legends, tells three stories about the origin of her name. The first narrates that a cacique named “Nome” suffered a death penalty when the princess he loved, the second says that the cacique was tortured by Spaniards until his death and that his tombstone said “Aquí penó Nomé,” and the last one assures that the name of the cacique was “Be Nu Nomé.

San Lorenzo
If you are a lover of history, get ready to explore the San Lorenzo Protected Forest. Discover the coastal defense batteries of the Canal built in the First World War, and the Fort of San Lorenzo, a colonial fort built at the mouth of the Chagres River that was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO

Casco Antiguo
To understand the cultural, social and architectural development of the city of Panama, the historic center will show you how it evolved since its transfer in 1673 to the new site protected by a great wall. During the day you can visit its museums, art galleries, churches, handicraft shops, buy typical Panamanian hats called the Pintao hat, and visit the grounds of the Palace of Las Garzas
