About

Lima is the largest city in Peru, located on the central western coast. This large city is highly polluted, noisy and covered in a misty coastal fog for most of the year. A sunny period does occur from December to April and during this time many people flood to the beach. The friendly people, museums, historical sites and the variety of entertainment and dining options are what make Lima an interesting place to visit.

Several festivals are held in Lima throughout the year. The Lord of the Miracles celebrated in October includes a series of street parades that include the carrying of a life size replica of Jesus sitting on an elaborate alter. October is also the beginning of the bullfighting season. The best bullfighters from all over the world come to compete in the Escapulario de Oro in the Plaza de Acho ring. Other festvities include the wine harvest in March and the international fair, Feria del Pacifico that takes place in November.

The Museum of Anthropology and Archaeology located in the Plaza Bolivar has an outstanding collection of textiles and potter from all the main cultures of ancient Peru. This is one of the most interesting museums in all of South America. The Museum of the Republic boasts exhibits relating to the colonial and independence periods and the National Museum houses impressive mock-ups of pre-Columbian archaeological sites and a replica of a massive carved stone idol, the Chavin stela. There are several other museums located in the area as well, such as the Gold Museum and the Museum of the Inquisition.

In the business districts of Miraflores and San Isidro is where you’ll find shopping, plenty of dining choices and theaters. At Parque Kennedy local artists sell their work during the weekends. If you’re looking for a more upscale cafe try the Vivaldi Cafe in Ricardo Palma. Also in Ricardo Palma you’ll find side streets filed with pizzerias with open air tables and a cobbled road leading to the Costa Verde, where beautiful beaches can be found.
