Flying from the southern Russian town of Ulan-Ude, Diana Tolstova, 30, had provided papers proving that she was exempt from security scans because of her pacemaker. For as-yet-unknown reasons, she went through anyway-and died by the departure gate, according to Telegraph.
Her husband Maxim held her while airport doctors arrived, but according to the 33-year-old, they did little to help. “They didn’t know what to do. They didn’t give her any first aid and they didn’t call an ambulance. My beautiful Diana died in my arms."
The airport is conducting an investigation, but a spokesman commented that “"Security and airport personnel are given strict instructions about how to handle people with pacemakers, and we warn them never to let a wearer go through a metal detector.” He added, the patient seems to either have forgotten about [the exemption papers], didn’t know, or became confused by the airport security.
To those travelers with pacemakers and other medical implants, make sure you carry a TSA notification card, downloadable here. It allows for discreet communication with security.
According to a Sun-Sentinel report on the TSA hotline’s frequently asked questions, the substitute pat-down “will be thorough,” but that beats the alternative.
