More than 50 percent of Delta’s flights between the United States and Mexico are now offering Basic Economy fare.
In an announcement made today by the airline, Delta noted the discounted fares are now available on several new flights including trips to Guadalajara and Mexico City. The Basic Economy fare was already available on flights to popular Mexican destinations Cancun, Puerto Vallarta and Cozumel.
The expansion comes at the same time Delta’s partner Aeromexico is rolling out a basic fare product as part of its new Branded Fares concept on routes between the United States and Mexico.
The Mexican airline’s new program is designed to offer every customer a wide choice of products tailored to their needs. It includes various tiers of seats for those traveling within Mexico and to and from the U.S. and Canada including Basic, Classic, Flexible, AM Plus, Comfort, and Premier fare options.
As for Delta, the company said its decision to expand Basic Economy is recognition of the many price-conscious customers who are traveling through Mexico.
The Atlanta-based airline first introduced Basic Economy in 2012. Customers who purchase the seats have restrictions related to the ticket transaction, but still receive such things as complimentary snacks in-flight, WiFi for purchase and free access to entertainment.

The restrictions on Delta’s Mexico Basic Economy fares include passengers not receiving a seat assignment until after check-in or at the gate. Passengers traveling together, including families, may not be seated together. These fares are also not changeable or refundable after the Risk-Free Cancellation Period. This includes same-day changes.
Other notable restrictions include Basic Economy passengers boarding in the last zone and not being eligible for paid or complimentary upgrades, even with SkyMiles Medallion status.
The Basic Fares expansion in Mexico is Delta’s latest effort to broaden the bargain ticket program. In 2017, Delta announced that Basic Economy is now available for purchase on more than 50 percent of flights between North America and Europe.
