Hawaiian Airlines Eyes Daily Summer Service Between Tokyo and Kona

Hawaiian Airlines has filed an application with the U.S. Department of Transportation in an effort to begin daily, non-stop service between Tokyo's Haneda Airport and Kona International Airport on the Island of Hawai'i this summer.
According to a press release, the Hawaiian Holdings subsidiary has urged the Transportation Department to "reallocate Delta's Haneda frequency based on market data."
"Kona continues to be a top destination for Japanese travelers, and we are more certain than ever that direct service to West Hawai'i is the highest and best use for the scarce Haneda slots that are at stake here," said Hawaiian Airlines president and CEO Mark Dunkerley in a statement.
"This route would provide unmatched public benefit by improving U.S. exports, boosting spending and economic growth within the United States and increasing U.S. jobs."
The Hawaii Tourism Authority (HTA) projects that the proposal would generate more than 531,000 visitor days and $146 million in visitor expenditures. Meanwhile, the airline's application estimates that direct service to Kona will result in 39,000 additional visitors and result in roughly 1,150 new jobs.
On top of that, the Hawaiian Airlines application calculates that direct service would lead to $65 million in new direct spending.
In addition to the HTA, the airline's application has won support from Hawaii Governor David Ige and Hawai'i Island Mayor Billy Kenoi.
"The increase in visitor days and corresponding visitor expenditures this route would provide will also generate significant and positive impact not only on our local economy, but on the economy of the United States. It is good news for the State that Hawaiian Airlines is actively pursuing this route, and we hope the Department of Transportation will favorably consider Hawaiian Airlines' application," said Gov. Ige in a statement.
Still, Hawaiian Airlines is seeking additional support for the route and is hoping for petition signatures.
Those looking to help the airline lock in its fifth Japan route are encouraged to visit Hawaiian Airlines' online advocacy webpage, where they can sign up to support its proposal.
