JetBlue Lands in Curacao
Airlines & Airports Cherese Weekes December 04, 2014

On Dec. 2, JetBlue’s inaugural flight to Curacao International Airport (CUR) from JFK marked the beginning of flights headed to the island twice a week. The new direct route was created to not only encourage more travel to the small ABC Island, but highlight the unique amenities and adventures that visitors of Curacao can enjoy.
In order to make these endeavors successful, passengers were whisked away into paradise from the moment they arrived at JetBlue’s newly constructed departure area. The aromas of bagels, custards, muffins, and pastries filled gate 30 as travelers were deliciously treated to a breakfast buffet while a live band brightened the mood with festive Caribbean melodies.
However, JetBlue had an even greater plan to bring the island flair onboard once passengers were comfortably seated, ate and were well rested.
As the plane slowly eased out of its parked location, passengers were reminded once again that Curacao was a vision that was clearly in sight as two JFK employees were seen holding the flag as it fiercely blew in the wind. But even this was tame compared to the surprises the airlines had up its sleeves, with the help of Curacao’s tourism board to entice visitors to perhaps prolong their stay or plan yet another special visit.
A little over three hours into the flight, the silence that fell over the aircraft was suddenly interrupted by JetBlue’s unique version of the game Bingo. From 20,000 JetBlue points and parasailing adventures to free romantic dinners and hotel stays, more and more passengers would disembark the airplane with a reason to return to Curacao as their seat numbers were drawn and called over the loud speaker.
One couple in particular was thrilled to return on their honeymoon after winning five free nights at the Santa Barbara Beach & Golf Resort. Still, no one felt like a loser because the hotel also rewarded every passenger onboard with a gift certificate that allowed them to stay for one free night.
The celebration of the partnership between JetBlue and Curacao came to a head in Willemstad on the Queen Emma Bridge, also affectionately known as the Swinging Old Lady. The beautifully lit bridge sparkled with lights and swayed harmoniously to the multitude of tourists and locals congregating here to toast to the success of the inaugural flight. Drummers livened the atmosphere as shutterbugs flicked away to capture every moment.
Capping the night off with a toast by Curacao’s signature Blue Lagoon, the bond between Curacao and JetBlue was official.
