Rolls-Royce Facing More Engine Issues, Job Cuts

British airplane engine manufacturer Rolls-Royce was already scheduled to cut around 4,000 jobs this week, but things have gone from bad to worse after a compressor problem that impacted Boeing planes has made its way to other engines designed by the company.
According to Reuters.com, the compressor issue is affecting the Trent 1000 package C engine that powers Boeing’s 787 Dreamliner planes. The technical failures have forced planes to be grounded, increased inspections and caused anger among airline clients.
Rolls-Royce officials revealed Monday the same issue with compressors not lasting as long as expected were found on a “small number of high life Package B engines.” As a result, all B-fleet engines are now required to complete a one-off inspection.
In total, the engine manufacturer said around 380 package-C engines and 166 package-B engines are currently in service. The mandatory inspections have led to about 30 impacted planes being grounded at any one time.
As the problems continue to arise for Rolls-Royce, airlines with impacted planes are being forced to lease alternative aircraft to ensure they have enough seats during the busy summer travel season.
The bad news regarding the engines comes as Rolls-Royce is expected to announce Friday the jobs of more than 4,000 being cut as part of the major restructuring program implemented by CEO Warren East.
