This Delta Flight is Your Best Eclipse Bet

Are you feeling lucky? Well, you might be if you are booked on Delta flight 2466 on August 21, the day of the solar eclipse. 

The flight path of DL 2466 mirrors the path of the solar eclipse almost completely, as demonstrated by a Reddit user in a popular Reddit topic.

The Reddit user used data from FlightAware and the path of the eclipse to find the perfect flight: DL 2466 leaves Portland PDX at 8:45 a.m. and lands in Atlanta at 4:29 p.m.

For those worried about the consistency of the route and whether or not the plane will follow that path, a pilot weighed in on the thread:

“Routes that are used constantly are like 95 percent the same day in and day out. They only vary slightly with weather or military activity. So this is a very probable path for the flight. Of course, if there is a massive line of thunder storms that makes them divert north or south to avoid, then they would not be on said path. Also, flight plans are not filed days in advance but hours only.”

For those who are worried if they book a window seat they will miss the event, another Redditor pointed them to Alaska Airlines flight 870, which flew from Anchorage to Honolulu at 35,000 feet March 8, 2016.

You don't have to be in the air to see the eclipse. For those serious about viewing the full event, there are a number of cities that are located within the path of the eclipse and will offer many different viewing opportunities.

While the business of flying during an eclipse is no doubt serious stuff, it didn’t take long for Redditors to get lighthearted.

“Spoiler alert: there is no eclipse. It's just this plane with a big disc glued onto the bottom,” noted another Redditor.
