A potential strike by Canadian Auto Workers (CAW) next week is threatening service by VIA Rail Canada. In negotiations since the fall of 2012, VIA Rail and CAW are amidst what the Canadian press is calling “marathon negotiations” to avoid the stoppage.
June 14 (12:01 a.m., Eastern Standard Time) has been set as the deadline for the strike by the CAW, a union representing some 2,000 workers employed by VIA Rail in the capacity of on board service staff, maintenance staff and customer service. During negotiations, VIA Rail promises to keep passengers and the public informed of any development through its Web site at viarail.ca, on Facebook or Twitter @VIA_rail.
