Imagine traveling through the Swiss Alps, winding your way around switchbacks, tunnels, through valleys and around one tall peak after another as the view transforms from one remarkable landmark to another without having to worry about a thing.
That’s what it’s like to travel through Switzerland by train.
It’s one of the best—and easiest—ways to navigate the country, and there are a number of legendary train routes that take travelers through regions that are almost unreachable by any other means of transport.
Railbookers offers train journeys in Switzerland that seamlessly loop travelers around the country. Journeys range in length and breadth—but there is one to match the desires of every traveler.
Switzerland’s Lakes and Mountains
This seven-day journey travels from Geneva to Montreaux, Interlaken, Jungfraujoch, Chur and finishes in Tirano, Italy, utilizing three scenic trains: the Glacier Express, the Bernina Express and the Golden Pass train.
The journey begins in Geneva with a short train ride to Montreaux alongside the lake. Guests disembark in the city of Montreaux, which is a hiker’s paradise and easily explored on foot. The Chateau de Chillon castle, perched on Lake Geneva, is a must-see.
The following day visitors board the Golden Pass train and travel above Lake Geneva to Zweisimmen. Visitors spend the night in Interlaken and then travel to Europe’s highest altitude railway station, Jungfrau, at more than 11,000 feet.
The Glacier Express train takes travelers from Brig to Chur through the Swiss Alps before guests join the Bernina Express to Tirano via Saint Moritz.
Classic Glacier and Bernina Express
A similar but shorter journey through the Alps, this itinerary stops in Interlaken, Jungfraujoch, Chur and finishes in Tirano.
The four-day trip includes both the Glacier Express and the Bernina Express as well as a day trip to Jungfraujoch.
Zermatt and Saint Moritz
Travelers who would like to build some of Switzerland’s most popular destinations into their itinerary will be interested in the five-day Zermatt and Saint Moritz journey during which they can see the famous Matterhorn Mountain.
The journey begins in Basel and finishes in Tirano and travels to the Matterhorn along the Gornergrat Cog Railway. Guests also can view the panoramic Swiss Alps from the Glacier Express and the Bernina Express, which will take them all the way to Italy.
Also included are stays at world-class Swiss resorts in both Zermatt and Saint Moritz.
Scenic Switzerland from Zurich
For those looking for a truly in-depth journey through Switzerland, take nine days to travel all around the country by rail.
Visitors will have the opportunity to ride some of the country’s most iconic railways, including the Bernina Express, the Glacier Express and the Golden Pass Line as well as the world’s steepest cogwheel train line to Mount Pilatus and the iconic journey onboard the Jungfrau Railway.
The journey also includes a stop to see the Matterhorn and stays in Zermatt and Saint Moritz as well as travel to Lake Lausanne and the town of Lucerne.
The full journey can begin in either Basel or Zurich.
