WHY IT RATES: The Caribbean continues to rebound across all segments of the cruise industry, yacht charters included. — Jason Leppert, Cruise Senior Writer
Sunsail and The Moorings, two of the most trusted names in the yacht charter industry, are reopening charter operations in St. Martin beginning February 1st, 2018. The move comes four months after the Caribbean’s record-breaking hurricane activity and just in time for the sold-out Heineken Regatta.
Their new charter base location, Marina Fort-Louis, will house a diverse fleet of monohulls, sailing catamarans, and powerboats from the island’s French capital in Marigot. New yachts are also expected to arrive in St. Martin in 2018, as a part of a $66.5 million investment in the Caribbean fleet for The Moorings and Sunsail last year.
Just a short 20-minute commute from Princess Juliana International Airport, Marina Fort-Louis is an idyllic location to begin and end a charter vacation. Fully-equipped with all the amenities including water, electricity, fuel, Wi-Fi, provisioning, shower and laundry facilities, Marina Fort-Louis is a premier yacht dockage that offers a wide range of services. The new Marigot Bay location also offers convenient access to shops and restaurants along the waterfront, most notably O’Plongeoir – a famous seafood establishment.
Though there are some places that are still recovering from Hurricane Irma, there is still plenty to do and see on a St. Martin charter vacation. Many local businesses are open, eager to welcome back guests, and crowd favorites like Philipsburg, Tintamarre, Anguilla, and St. Barts remain as beautiful as ever.
According to Josie Tucci, Vice President of Sales and Marketing, “Nothing could have prepared us for the devastation that September’s hurricanes brought to St. Martin but we couldn’t be more thrilled to invite charterers back to one of our most popular destinations, and from a brand new base location in a world-class marina.”
Since The Moorings and Sunsail teamed up to launch the Caribbean Comeback fundraiser in October, much progress has been made to help restore and rebuild. However, the islands still need support, best demonstrated by going back to ensure the future of the tourism industry.
