At the end of first quarter of a close contest between the New England Patriots and the Seattle Seahawks, Carnival Corp. joined the ranks of numerous iconic companies with their first Super Bowl ad.
Accompanying scenes of Carnival ships on the water in natural and urban settings and people of all ages enjoying time on the water is an audio excerpt from a September 1962 speech by President Kennedy at the Newport Yacht Club just before the annual America's Cup race out of Newport, R.I.
The section of the speech that accompanies the commercial illustrates man’s inextricable link to the seas:
I really don't know why it is that all of us are so committed to the sea, except I think it is because in addition to the fact that the sea changes and the light changes, and ships change, it is because we all came from the sea.
And it is an interesting biological fact that all of us have, in our veins the exact same percentage of salt in our blood that exists in the ocean, and, therefore, we have salt in our blood, in our sweat, in our tears. We are tied to the ocean. And when we go back to the sea, whether it is to sail or to watch it we are going back from whence we came.
Then the words “Come Back to the Sea.” appear onscreen followed by a shot of the Carnival fleet, and the logo of every one of Carnival Corp.’s brands.
