Defined as “a balanced, pleasing, or suitable arrangement of parts” by those dictionary wizards of Merriam-Webster, the word “harmony” tends to deliver a sense of calm and comfort. As a fitting reflection of that word, the developers of Harmony Glamping Tulum merged hotel accommodations and luxury camping within the grounds of the Green Beat organic permaculture farm.
Guests have the option of glamping – aka glamour camping – in a luxury bell tent spruced up with homey comforts. Or they can share more traditional suites that are each air conditioned and feature a private bathroom.
With its commitment to the environment, the funky, family-friendly retreat was designed with eco-friendly technology and materials that are in accordance to the principles of the green philosophy of glamping.
“Harmony is a one of a kind hotel in Tulum, and complements this destination perfectly with its chic yet relaxed, eco-friendly approach,” says Xavier Fux, the hotel’s general director. “The themed personality of the hotel builds the entire guest experience, where you’ll get a sense of the local flavor and culture in a natural, quirky setting.”
All guests have access to complimentary WiFi, a communal refrigerator, purified water and a fire pit area. Additional services include bicycle rentals, massage treatments, yoga classes and onsite organic farm tours/workshops. With its four sun beds, four chairs and two lounge beds, the swimming pools begs to soaking in the Caribbean sun
Here are five ways to find perfect “Harmony” at Harmony Glamping Hotel.
1) Green-Themed Glamping
Rooted in Africa for travelers wanting to camp near the Savannah and its stellar wildlife, the global trend of glamping has twisted tents into luxury accommodations sporting the comforts of home. While today’s glamping hotels are geared to different types of travelers and a range of budgets, they all share a sustainable green philosophy.
According to Fux, Tulum’s flagship glamping experience was created with a vision and mission of providing a comfortable, luxurious and natural setting to welcome detox, yoga, vegetarian and permaculture retreats.
With a diameter of 13 feet and height of 9 feet, each of Harmony’s waterproof tents features a queen bed, two windows with mosquito netting, solid flooring, fans, luxury cotton sheets, lock, and an outdoor veranda with table. Tents share a clean and tidy bathroom divided into men and ladies sections sharing a common sink. Each is separately outfitted with a pair of showers and toilets.
“The glamping tents are meant for people that like a sense of adventure without compromising comfort and a good night sleep,” says Fux. “They are all decorated with a different theme, and offer a versatile option to common lodging. Expect nature sounds, a fan to cool you down, cotton sheets, and a sexy atmosphere.”
Individual tent styles and themes are reflected in names of Flower Power, Maroc, Ibiza, Santorini, Shiva and Frida.
2) Luxury Suites
Fashioned after a conch shell, the main house has a communal living space where guests can interact and hang out in the funky living room.
“The Harmony Suites have character,” says Fux. “Their architecture and interior design are unique, and each room is totally different. African, Tuscan, Mediterranean and Boho-chic features intermingle to create an intimate ambience that gives you the feeling of being a personal guest in a private home rather than just a hotel occupant.”
All suite rooms feature private bathrooms and air conditioning in the bedroom, plus varying amenities that range from walk-in closets to ceiling fans or a shared terrace.
3) Healthy Fare
With Chef Manuel Pisch at the helm, FLOW Restaurant wows with its global fare from 9 a.m. to 11 p.m.
“The soft drinks, yogurt and Kombucha are home made, as well as all the dough for the bread, calzone and pizzas, which are all baked in our wood fired oven,” says Fux.
He adds that the eatery’s super food smoothies, Acai bowls and deserts are “legendary,” while the wide array of world cuisine dishes offered have made this restaurant a staple with guests and local residents alike.
Lunch and dinner menus brim with Middle Eastern cuisine, Vietnamese Pho and organic salads made of produce harvested daily in the hotel’s permaculture gardens.
4) Growing with Green Beat
Guests into organics grow more in tune with Green Beat that produces fresh produce for Tulum’s restaurants, hotels and the community in general. Designed according to permaculture principles, this gem walks the line with more than 60 raised grow beds, a nursery, an aquaponic system, compost piles, dry toilets, chicken coupe and drip irrigation systems.
Fux notes that for more than four years, Green Beat has thrived with basil, arugula, chard, tomatoes, lettuce, habanero, eggplant, kale, mizuna, peppers, pak choi, bananas and papaya that are free of GMO seeds or pesticides.
“We work the farm by hand, and nourish and build our own soil by adding layers of our own rich home made compost,” says Fux.
Those wanting to dig a little deeper are privy to workshops held every other weekend, plus a volunteer program with four- to six-hour shifts for experiencing the day-to-day operations of an organic farm.
5) Eco Adventures
Harmony’s location makes it a springboard to many of Cancun’s and the Yucatan Peninsula’s stellar attractions and activities. The hotel’s team assists guests with booking such eco adventures as Xel-Ha, Chichen Itza ruins, Cenote Trail, Siaan Kaan Natural Reserve, kayaking with manatees, diving and stand up paddling.
Seasonal Rates & Reservations
During high season through March, nightly glamping rates are from $70 USD, while suites are from $110-125. During low (June, September and October) and mid season (April, May and November), rates are from $50-55 for tents and $60-85 for suites. Prices do not include a 16 percent VAT Tax.
