Bermuda’s government has issued a request for proposals for development of a 124-acre site that formerly housed a Club Med resort, and the head of the country’s tourism authority said developers have already expressed interest in the property.
The Ministry of Tourism Development and Transport published a request for proposals in the Royal Gazette newspaper, seeking response from interested parties before the end of March. In a Royal Gazette interview David Dodwell, chairman of Bermuda’s recently formed tourism authority, said he is “optimistic” the site will attract a developer. Dodwell said he expects to the results of the RFP in April.
Located in the historic town of St. George’s, the site has been vacant since the Club Med Hotel’s 1988 closure. The property was later leased to developer Carl Bazarian, who in 2008 announced plans to erect a Park Hyatt Resort. Although the project received planning approval it was never built and the government terminated Bazarian’s development contract in 2012.
