Navy Pier’s Winter WonderFest was shut down Friday night after about 100 teenagers were involved in eight different brawls, reported ABC 7 Chicago. Five were arrested and charged with reckless conduct, while a pregnant woman went to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
Bystanders described an atmosphere of confusion and fear. "We were basically pushed around and people were like, 'Get to the side,' so we all went to the side and we didn't find out that there was a fight until at least a couple of minutes, but we were really really scared," said witness Camila Cuecha.
Reports of gunshots were unfounded. "People are running rampant, a couple of kids running, saying there were gunshots. We didn't hear it, but they said there was. We just got our family out," Devorah Anderson, another witness, said.
The Chicago tourist attraction, located on Lake Michigan, opened as a shipping and recreation pier in 1916. It has since evolved into 50 acres of parks, gardens, shops, restaurants, family attractions, and exhibition facilities that draws 16 million visitors a year.
