Edition, the collaboration between Marriott International and Ian Schrager, is opening its long-awaited third lifestyle hotel in London this fall. The company’s two other properties are in Istanbul and Hawaii.
Although there were originally plans for 100 Editions within a 10-year timeframe, those plans were scaled back because of the recession. A year and a half ago, Edition said it planned to openfive hotels in major gateway citiesacross three continents by 2015. The new projects include a hotel in New York’s Clock Tower building, as well as new properties in Bangkok, Abu Dhabi, Los Angeles and Gurgaon, India.
The Edition property in Waikiki property was plagued by a hostile takeover of the hotelby its owners, which was then followed by lawsuits between Marriott and the owners.
The London Edition will be set in a landmark building that was originally five townhouses built in 1835, and later became the Berners Hotel. Its design, which was inspired by English country manors and London’s private gentleman’s clubs, also boasts edgy, modern and urban elements. The hotel will feature a dance club, two bars, 24-hour fitness facility and 173 rooms and suites. The property is located in Fitzrovia within walking distance to Soho, Covent Garden, Oxford Street and the theater district.
