Officials from the Montreal and Mexico tourism boards announced the signing of a memorandum of understanding Monday during a meeting in Mexico City.
As part of the agreement, Tourisme Montreal and the Mexico Tourism Board will collaborate on initiatives to increase tourism in both cities. In addition, the boards will promote dialogue between their respective tourism industries.
Both organizations are also expected to share information to improve their respective work methods, including performance indicators, statistics, tourist welcome strategies and technology solutions.
“Tourism is a major driver of economic and social development for both Quebec and Mexico,” Tourisme Montreal CEO Yves Lalumiere said in a statement. “Today, we are confirming our desire to increase bilateral trade and support growth in the tourism industry, for which the outlook is very promising. This agreement is very good news for both organizations.”

“I am very pleased about this agreement,” Montreal Mayor Valerie Plante said. “This initiative bolsters what was already a close working relationship between Montreal and Mexico City, particularly on the economic level. I will reinforce the importance of this relationship when I meet with Miguel Mancera, the Head of Government of Mexico City, during my visit to the Mexican capital today."
Tourisme Montreal announced the number of tourists coming to the city from Mexico in 2017 increased by 50 percent to around 82,000. The tourism board expects another 15 percent increase in 2018.
