Eighteen more beaches in Mexico have now received coveted Blue Flag certification from the nonprofit Foundation for Environmental Education.
The designation recognizes coastal regions that meet high standards of water quality, safety, environmental education and information, services and environmental management.
Mexico now has more than 50 beaches that have achieved Blue Flag status with new beaches in Baja California Sur, Guerrero, Oaxaca and Quintana Roo.
The announcement of new qualifying destinations takes place annually and was made by the Blue Flag International Jury 2018.
This was the first time that the number of Blue Flag sites worldwide reached more than 4,500. Members of the panel include representatives from the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), the United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO), International Lifesaving Federation (ILS), the European Environment Agency (EEA), the European Union for Coastal Conservation (EUCC), the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), an Environmental Education expert, the International Council of Marine Industry Associations (ICOMIA), the European Network for Accessible Tourism (ENAT) and FEE.
