My Favorite Trip: Judy Nidetz on Rome, Florence and Venice

Never been to Italy before? One of Judy Nidetz’s favorite itineraries bridges Rome, Florence and Venice and provides an ideal itinerary for first-timers to the country.
“Italy is such an easy country to navigate, the people are very friendly and the food is delicious,” she said, adding that there’s also “a wonderful mix of cultural and historical sites and leisure activities.”
Nidetz, a Chicago-based independent contractor with Travel Experts, recommends, at minimum for first-time visitors, three nights in Rome, three in Florence and two in Venice.
In Rome, Nidetz suggests touring the Vatican with a private guide. “That way you don’t have to wait in line,” she said. She also recommends using a private guide for a tour of ancient Rome, including the Coliseum, Forum and Circus Maximus.
“Travelers can also take a walking tour on their own of the Trevi Fountain, the Pantheon and the Spanish steps – and perhaps if they’re interested they can make a private appointment to tour the Borghese Gallery,” said Nidetz.
She would book clients into the St. Regis room. “The St. Regis has wonderful suites, which are especially nice for families — combined with St. Regis luxury and butler service.”
Must-see sites in Florence include the Uffizi Gallery, featuring the works of Botticelli, Michelangelo and Leonardo da Vinci; and the Museum of Accademia to see the iconic Statue of David.
Nidetz also recommends that travelers take a walking tour of the Duomo and visit the Pitti Palace, the original home of the Medici family. “You can tour the apartments and the gardens, and it’s set on big beautiful palace grounds.
A day trip from Florence would include Siena, whose central piazza hosts a horse race two times each summer, and San Gimignano, a walled medieval hill town.
For accommodations, Nidetz recommends the Four Seasons. “This super-luxe property is away from the crowds and noise of the city center and offers a quick shuttle into town,” said Nidetz. “It also has lovely gardens, rooms and suites.”
In Venice, Nidetz suggests that travelers sightsee on their own. “Venice itself is the attraction,” she said. “You can pretty much walk on your own and see St. Mark’s Square, Doge’s Palace and maybe the Jewish Quarter. Basically Venice itself is the destination.” Nidetz also recommends a boat trip to the Murano Glass Factory.
Nidetz recommends a stay at the Hotel Danieli, a stone’s throw away from St. Mark’s Square. “That’s my favorite,” she said. “While not the most expensive choice in town, the location can’t be beat and the hotel is a historic palace. Starwood Luxury Collection has done a wonderful job with refurbishments throughout the years.
