London is the world's best destination for 2019, according to TripAdvisor's 2019 Travelers' Choice Awards.
The U.K. capital surpassed second-ranked Paris with the help of the international buzz generated by Prince Harry and Meghan Markle's May 2018 wedding.
According to TripAdvisor, several of London’s royal-focused experiences, including Buckingham Palace tours, saw year-over-year bookings increase between 94 and 231 percent.
"We are delighted to see London top the list of TripAdvisor’s Travelers’ Choice Awards for Destinations. To have the world’s largest travel site’s community name London as the best-rated destination in the world is a true validation of the incredibly hard work of our tourism industry, ensuring our visitors have exceptional experiences every single day of the year," said Visit London CEO Laura Citron in a statement.
Rome, Crete and Bali round out the top five destinations worldwide generated by an algorithm based on reviews and ratings for hotels, restaurants and experiences in destinations worldwide over a 12-month period taking into account both quality and volume of reviews.
Phuket, Barcelona, Istanbul, Marrakech and Dubai conclude the Top 10 Travelers' Choice Destinations in the World for 2019.
In the U.S., New York City is the top destination for the ninth consecutive year, based on TripAdvisor's data, edging out Maui and Oahu, Hawaii, which rank second and third, respectively.
Las Vegas and Orlando round out the top five destinations domestically, followed by San Diego, Chicago, New Orleans, San Francisco and the Big Island of Hawaii.
"With more than 156,000 destinations listed on TripAdvisor, travelers can find inspiration and advice on where to stay, what to do and where to eat during every type of trip. The Travelers’ Choice awards for Destinations recognize major cities and islands that continue to deliver an outstanding experience and are beloved by our global community of travelers," said Desiree Fish, vice president of global communications for TripAdvisor, in a statement. "For those who want to cross these popular destinations off their travel bucket list, we recommend visiting during off-peak seasons when you can find great savings and fewer crowds."
Both London and New York City are still alive in the inaugural March Travel Madness Bracket: The Ultimate Journey Tourney, which you can vote on right now.
