Travel website DreamPlanGo and travel referral service Tripology recently reported findings on the top winter travel destinations and plans.
DreamPlanGo asked a cross-section of fans and followers what wintertime adventures were on their wish lists and in their plans.
Of those surveyed, more than 70 percent indicated they would be traveling this winter.
As expected, 66 percent are looking toward the sun (not literally), more interested in beaches and warm weather. The top dream destinations included Bora Bora (60 percent of respondents), Hawaii (57 percent), the Caribbean islands (55 percent) and Costa Rica (30 percent). Other top places included Fiji, Tahiti and Bali. Respondents could indicate three trips in the survey.
Of course, snow sports are another popular winter tradition. Nearly 16 percent of travelers hopes to take a winter-sport related trip this winter.
The Swiss Alps (31 percent of respondents), Lake Tahoe (20 percent), Colorado (17 percent) and Whistler (15 percent) were predictably dream ski destinations. Other top destinations included Jackson Hole (Wyoming), Sun Valley (Idaho), Deer Valley and Park City (Utah), and Montana.
As far as big trips down the road, many travelers (27 percent) wanted to visit Mexico, while Florida (16 percent), Jamaica (15 percent) and the Bahamas (15 percent) were also popular destinations. Key West was mentioned frequently, as well.
Dream "short trips" or getaways included Las Vegas (25 percent), Florida (12.5 percent) and California (10 percent).
For Las Vegas, it was the shows, night life and gambling that provided the most attraction to travelers.
For Florida, it was the Orlando area and its theme parks, as well as the chance to lounge on a warm beach on either coast.
Tripology's Consumer Travel Trends Report revealed that the the most requested U.S. cities for 2013-14 winter travel were Las Vegas, Orlando, Miami, Honolulu and Maui.
In addition, the most requested travel destinations worldwide were the United States, Mexico, Jamaica, the Bahamas and the United Kingdom.
Tripology found that the average trip budget has decreased by 10 percent since the third quarter of 2012, but has increased in comparison to other 2013 quarters. The average trip length has remained at eight days over the past five quarters.
