U.S. State Department Issues Alert on Potential Terrorism in India
Destination & Tourism David Cogswell October 19, 2011
The U.S. Department of State issued an alert to warn about the continued possibility of terrorist attacks throughout India. The department urges citizens to pay particular attention to their personal security during the Indian holiday season, which includes Hindu, Islamic, and other religious and secular holidays between October and January.
Recent Indian government advisories and local media report increased indications that terrorists are planning attacks in India. In the past, terrorists have targeted markets, public transportation such as trains and public buses, religious sites, hotels and restaurants. During the November 2008 attacks in Mumbai, terrorists specifically targeted hotels and other public places.
The State Department urges U.S. citizens traveling and residing abroad to enroll in the Smart Travelers Enrollment Program (STEP). U.S. citizens without Internet access may enroll directly at the U.S. Embassy or Consulate at their destination. By enrolling, U.S. citizens make it easier for the Embassy or Consulate to contact them in case of emergency. Updated information on travel and security may be obtained from the Department of State by calling 888-407-4747 or 202-501-4444, or visisting http://travel.state.gov.
