Another month, another glorious rollout of some fine movies and TV shows on Netflix, including various fare that is right up the alley of respective traveling aficionados.
From the truly iconic to the downright dumb, there is plenty of entertainment to waste your time on this August, giving so much opportunity to those who already caught up on Sherlock and Dr. Who.
Now the full list of new Netflix offerings can be seen at Complex, which is quite extensive. However, we decided to highlight just a few selections that take movie locations and make them part of the cast of characters. Of course, feel free to offer your own thoughts or include some movies whose destinations need more attention.
Evita (1996) - Right before she became a walking skeleton, Madonna took on the role of Eva Peron in the cinematic retelling of the musical Evita. Now we do have to say this movie was shot all over the world, including in Budapest and London. However, it does a fantastic job of romanticizing the look, feel and visceral tone of 1940's Argentina.
Mad Max (1979) - If you were ever curious as to how the gorgeous Australian countryside might look in a lawless, post-apocalyptic world, you are in luck:
Red Dawn (1984) - Find out what camping out in New Mexico is like as a full invasion takes place. Anybody bring s'mores?
Rocky IV (1985) - Like Red Dawn, the movie's location differs from the one presented in the script. Obviously, it was hard to film in Soviet Russia during the Cold War, so producers made the most of picturesque Vancouver as well as Wyoming.
Thankfully, you get to see a great deal of the outdoors thanks to what seems like 40 minutes of montage scenes.
The Birdcage (1996) - South Beach is a much of a character in this movie as Nathan Lane's iconic Albert Goldman.
Spice World (1997)- We did mention that some of these selections were dumb. Now we can't be sure, but we assume the 1998 flick featuring over an hour's worth of Girl Power was made with a straight face. Regardless, the movie is a great way to see the London sights and question your ability to waste your own time responsibly.
And that concludes a brief snapshot of the locales and scenery that present far more than meaningless background, piquing the interest of even the most cynical traveler.
Except for those who watch Spice World, because there is no coming back from that.
