I always thought that once my baggage left my hands at the check-in counter, it left on an amazing journey of Willy Wonka proportions. Thanks to this super cool video, I now know the truth.
There are no Oompa Loompa anthems or magical wizards that wave wands and send my luggage off to some destination all my own.
Instead, our luggage sets off on an exciting journey of conveyor belts-much like we do when meandering about an airport with those nifty moving walkways.
The Daily Mail posted the following video that was taken at Amsterdam Airport Schiphol, offering us a first-person view of what it's like to be a piece of luggage, stuffed to the brim with your socks and unmentionables:
Contrary to popular opinion, the luggage isn't just tossed around until it reaches your airplane-or in the very rare case, some other airplane that just so happens to be going nowhere near your destination.
Things are far more amazing than all that. In fact, it looks like one awesome sorting ride that we would love to whip around on ourselves.
The Daily Mail explains all of this is to aid an airport that really does need efficient means to get bags to their proper destination: "Amsterdam Airport Schiphol is the fifth busiest airport in Europe, with more than 55 million passengers flying to more than 300 destinations last year. Its south baggage hall operates the world's most innovative baggage system, with six robots to load baggage containers."
Now we will still hold dear to our belief that some Merlin character is behind the scenes, taking care of all the sorting.
