Are you already thinking about building a snowman this winter or looking for a snowy escape in the mountains? If snow hasn’t already plummeted in your city it is on the way, but before you think about warming up with the typical monotonous winter activities you might want to give these four a try.
There’s no doubt that they may seem a bit bizarre if you’ve never heard of them, which makes these activities all the more worthwhile if you’re willing to ski with a horse or glide along a frozen river. And who knows; you just might learn new ways to make your white winter a bit more colorful.
Scandinavia: Skijoring
If you’re looking for a sport that you and your four- legged friend can enjoy this winter then skijoring may be right up your alley. This Scandinavian pastime was once a mode of transportation but evolved into a fun activity; perhaps it is because gliding through the snow on skis while holding onto reins that are attached to dogs or a horse is a thrill all adventure seekers should enjoy.
Japan: Yukigassen
There is no shortage of festivities in Japan, but none of them bring on goose bumps like Yukigassen. Every February, participants willing to brave the country’s frigid temperatures migrate to the base of a volcanic dome on the island of Hokkaido to partake in the ultimate snow fight.
Not even the fear of an eruption can deter the dozens of teams from destroying their opponents as snowballs are sent flying through the air in each three minute round.
Europe and North America: Ice Yachting
The excitement of yachting doesn’t have to end once the heat of summer is overpowered by winter’s breezes, because when many of the world’s waterscapes have frozen over the thrill of ice yachting begins. The sport has become a beloved recreational activity for fisherman, sailors and yachters of course, competing to become undefeated champions in contests like the Baikal Ice Yachting Race.
To the inexperienced observer the sport appears to be a mix between windsurfing and kiting, but a true competitor knows that in order to achieve bragging rights the blades of his ice yachting boat must be able to glide along the ice like a professional figure skater.
Korea: Polar Bear Swimming Contest
If you think you may have been a polar bear in another life then you’ll want to participate in Korea’s annual Polar Bear Swimming Festival. When the country’s climate hits the ultimate low celebrators flock to Haeundae Beach to take a dip in its cold water.
However, you won’t see these swimmers racing towards a finish line, but rather soaking in the frigid water in an attempt to welcome a prosperous year ahead and rejuvenate the body. Just keep in mind this celebration is not for the weak at heart, especially if you’re not fond of taking an icy bath.
