5 Tips To Planning the Perfect Bonnie Bonnie Tour of Scotland
Features & Advice CIE Tours International David Cogswell April 15, 2014

If you’re planning a trip to Scotland, you’ll probably want some guidance from some of the people who really know the destination so you’ll get the most out of every minute you spend there. TravelPulse asked CIE Tours marketing whiz James Vardakis for some tips on how to get the best out of your Scottish tour.
Here’s what he told us.
See the Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo!
"If shows and spectacles are your thing, make sure to see the Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo. Held in August every year and featured on 32 different CIE Tours itineraries, The Military Tattoo boasts bagpipes, massed military bands and display teams from around the world, all against the backdrop of Edinburgh Castle.
As one of Scotland’s most celebrated gatherings, we feature it on all escorted tours of Scotland during Tattoo season. But be sure to book early – these departures are first to sell out!"
Dress in layers and bring a raincoat!
"While the British Isles have a very temperate climate, the weather is often unpredictable and weather forecasts need to be taken with a grain of salt. Particularly along the west coast and through the beautiful Scottish Highlands, rain showers and wind can be sporadic despite a warm and sunny start to your day.
And be sure to dress warm when you head out for a scenic cruise on one of Scotland’s famous Lochs, a popular highlight on most of our Scotland itineraries. But don’t forget: this rainy and misty weather is responsible for giving Scotland it’s lush vegetation and unique landscapes."
Visit more than one country.
"Because international flights can be an expensive and long for many people from the States, make sure you’re getting the best out of your visit to the British Isles. A great way to do this is to take a combination tour and see more than just one country. While several tour operators offer combination tours, CIE offers the largest selection of combination tours for travelers to see Ireland, Scotland, England and Wales.
I would highly suggest the Taste of Scotland and Ireland or the Scottish and Irish Dream. Both tours take you through the most breathtaking landscapes of both countries and take you on an in-depth look at these rich cultural destinations."
Scotland is a goldmine for history buffs!
"From the rapid expansion of Glasgow during the industrial revolution to the medieval streets of the Royal Mile leading to Edinburgh Castle, Scotland’s cities are teeming with historical sites and world class museums to explore.
But Scotland’s history isn’t confined to city limits – your tour director will narrate your journey through the countryside where famous battles and clashes took place in the most humbling and awe-inspiring landscapes. Be sure to check out the Culloden Visitor Centre, an interactive introduction to the battlefield where Bonnie Prince Charlie was defeated at the Battle of Culloden in 1746."
Prepare to dig into great cuisine.
"Contrary to the popular belief of many here in the States, Scotland is renowned for its great food and drink. The temperate climate and varied weather conditions give the country the ideal situation to produce a wide variety of produce, meats, seafood and much more.
Be sure to check out some of the world-class restaurants of the New City section of Edinburgh and visit a local pub in the Highlands for the freshest basket of fish and chips you will ever try. And don’t forget to try the haggis – just don’t ask what’s in it! Wash this all down with a “wee dram” of whiskey from some of the finest distilleries in the world and you’ll find yourself coming back for seconds."
