Just because summer comes to an end does not mean the fun has to stop, especially when so many destinations aim to please their guests well into the fall. The following 10 destinations are constantly buzzing with activities during the summer, but as travelers head back to their regular schedules their landscapes are not quite finished playing host.
This makes them ideal travel destinations during autumn as well, because not only have most of the crowds returned home, but enjoying their fall attractions also means better prices and dodging the sweltering heat. So before you think about booking that summer getaway, you might want to wait until autumn comes around to see world-class events amid cool breezes while escaping the swarms of tourists.
London, U.K: Lord Mayor’s Show
On Nov. 8, the drums of marching bands and horses galloping throughout the streets as well of sights of gigantic colorful floats mean the Lord Mayor’s Show has officially begun. During this historic ceremony the newly appointed Lord Mayor of the city receives an extravagant welcoming in his new role as he and other British officials are carried through London’s financial hub via exquisite coaches.
The Lord Mayor, who is traditionally dressed in a bright robe, can be typically seen waving his feathered hat to the crowd as he travels from the Mansion House to the Royals Courts of Justice before pledging his loyalty to the crown. In good old British tradition, the procession takes spectators through London’s eccentric past while exuding elements from pageantry and festival celebrations to become one of the most colorful annual fall events to decorate the city’s streets.
Paris, France: Nuit Blanche
Just as fall’s bright foliage color Paris’ beautiful landscape, so does Nuit Blanche. This annual celebration of artistry blooms throughout the city starting at 7 p.m. on on Oct. 4 to 7 a.m. on Oct. 5. Some say it is a way to get into the fall spirit since music also erupts during the festivity, luring visitors to discover the source of the rhythmic sounds.
Upon discovery, a world of art explodes as Paris' urban spaces transform into a canvas dynamically brushed with the strokes of local artists creating masterpieces to broaden the perception of art. During Nuit Blanche, art shows up just about anywhere including along the facades of neoclassic centerpieces. And with this year expected to be bigger than ever, there’s no telling what innovative ideas artists and in what spaces their creations will show up next.
Cancun, Mexico: International Caribbean Cultural Festival
Cancun has an abundance of beachside thrills, but there’s more to the Mexican city than its barefoot pleasures. The International Caribbean Cultural Festival is a celebration that dives full-force in the heritage of Mexico.
Commencing Nov. 10-15, a lively social event filled with songs, dance and poetry livens the atmosphere as each day brings new floods of people driven by the colorful Mexican flair. However, once salsa rings through the air the International Caribbean Cultural Festival blossoms into a huge party with a variety of dancers teasing spectators with hypnotic movements.
Rome, Italy: Rome Film Festival
It comes as no surprise that the ancient city of Rome would be fond of films. After all, timeless attractions like the Colosseum prove that the lifestyle of the Romans revolved around their need to be entertained. The same rings true for the Rome Film Festival, affectionately known as the Festival Internazionale del Film di Roma that brings the culture of film in the elaborate spaces of the Auditorium Parco della Musica during Oct. 15-26.
Attended by big-name international celebrities and citizens alike, this red carpet event allows films buffs to escape amid captivating scenes while honoring the works of the newest and veteran directors. Staying true to the need of putting on a great show, the Rome Film Festival is divided into various sections that appeal to every type of moviegoer; from the children films of Alice nella Citta to the essential European premiers of the Mondo Genere.
Aruba: Third Annual Food Truck Showdown
With pleasant weather year-round, fall in Aruba is an idyllic season that comes with an array of activities to tease the senses, especially when the third annual Food Truck Showdown is in full swing. During this gastronomic experience, culinary masters indulge in a face-off to appease the appetites of salivating foodies.
Taking place on Oct.24-25, this is the perfect opportunity to sink your teeth in the diverse tastes of the country, although it is not hard to ignore because of the delicious aromas pouring out of the food trucks and hovering over the competiton like a cloud. Aruba provides many ways to please the palate, which is proof of the mouthwatering foods served up island style at the Food Truck Showdown.
Puerto Vallarta, Mexico: Day of the Dead Festival
You may not see trick-or-treaters knocking on doors for candy during this spooky holiday tradition, although the costumes and painted faces are a reminder of Halloween. However, the Dead Festival is no ordinary event because it artistically honors the souls of the deceased with a variety of events that include building altars surrounded with the favorite items the departed enjoyed while alive.
Some may also write poems or incorporate comical aphorisms in their dedications to uplift the mournful spirit of the festival. Beginning the night of Oct. 31-Nov. 2, the Day of the Dead Festival is steeped in religion, yet showcasing the creative side of Mexican culture with such elaborate exhibitions intended to make their loved ones proud.
Jerusalem, Israel: The Night Spectacular Sound & Light Show
Witnessing the pages of the bible come to life by exploring the city of Jerusalem is a wonderful sight to behold. But when its iconic landmarks are illuminated by a kaleidoscope of colors and sounds, you’ll be blessed with memories that will last a lifetime that no words can describe.
The Night Spectacular Sound & Light Show is a brilliant spectacle that aims to stun spectators by painting the ancient façade of the Citadel with illustrations telling the stories of Muhammad, King David and other historic legends. For 45 minutes, visitors are transported to the past and given an in-depth view of the most influential times and people who continue to bless the world with their legacies.
Dublin, Ireland: Bram Stroker Festival
Dublin is a playground for the traveler, and on Oct. 24-27 the city has plans to showcase its darker side with the Bram Stroker Festival. In honor of Dubliner Bram Stroker, the author of “Dracula,” mystery and gothic culture will consume the atmosphere with performances and props inspired by the popular fictitious tale.
With events designed to scare, it is best to proceed with caution in order to not become one of Dracula’s fatal victims. If you’re a fan of a good horror story, you’ll be intrigued by the eerie attractions of the Bram Stroker Festival, where each step deeper is guaranteed to bring the horrific novel to life.
Madrid, Spain: Bullfighting
No visit to Madrid is complete without witnessing the thrill of man against beast that is a bullfight. From March to October, venues like the Plaza de Toros de Las Ventas echo the "oohs" and "aahs" of spectators as matadors taunt their beastly targets with daunting performances and glitzy outfits. Dating back to the 17th century, it’s every bullfighter for himself once he steps into the ring majestically moving in harmony with the bull’s vicious charges.
A bullfight consists of three sections called tercios with three matadors facing off with a total six raging bulls. During the first segment, the bullfighter uses a bright-colored cloak to taunt the bull. The second contender is required to place various banderillas, which are poles with colorful ribbons attached to them. And the third matador is required to kill the bull with his sword. The audience’s reactions determine whether the bullfighter is a victor who receives the ears and tail as a reward or the highest honor of being carried out of the venue and paraded through Madrid’s streets like a war hero.
