Celebrate National Plan for Vacation Day
Features & Advice Janeen Christoff January 31, 2017

It’s time to declare your vacation days.
Project: Time Off has declared Jan. 31 National Plan for Vacation Day. Hyper-connectivity and “work martyrdom” are preventing American workers from taking time off and one of the biggest reasons for this is a lack of planning.
“We understand the value of vacation time for our relationships, personal well-being, and professional success. Yet, 51% of Americans skip the one step that could help them vacation: planning. Individuals who plan are more likely to use all of their time off, take more vacation days at once, and report greater levels of happiness in every category measured,” says Project: Time Off.
The organization is a national movement that is dedicated to shifting American culture toward one that sees the essential value of time off and personal well-being.

According to Project: Time Off, Americans leave 658 million vacation days on the table and less than half of households take the time to plan vacation time. But there are advantages to setting aside time.
Fifty-one percent of those who plan their vacation took all of their time off where just 39 percent of non-planners did.
Sixty-nine percent of planners took a week or more of vacation a time, where just 46% of non-planners did.
Another win: the time spent planning correlated with greater happiness.
