Dispatch: My Encounter With Aruba's Wild Side
Features & Advice Cherese Weekes October 03, 2014

As I predicted, Aruba’s nightlife was quite a delight. The IHG group met once more at Holiday Inn Resort Aruba-Beach Resort & Casino's Sea Breeze Restaurant for a night of music and delicious food; and once again the seafood restaurant did not disappoint.
We were treated to a delectable four-course meal prepared by executive chef, Imre Maraczi, who appeased every craving I had, including my sweet tooth with his scrumptious coconut crème brulee and vanilla ice cream.
The more the night progressed, the more we were eager to delve into the Aruban culture as our party migrated over to the adjacent bar called Moomba, which is a popular local and tourist hangout spot. The cool breeze flowing from the ocean created great vibes that sparked interesting conversations as visitors and residents became more acquainted with each other.
The more I embraced the beautiful surroundings of the country and its people, the more I became entranced under Aruba’s spell. And that spell lasted well into the next morning and after a delicious buffet-style breakfast at the resort's Corals Restaurant.
Little did I know that there was more to this small island than quiet days of sun-kissed beach life. Aruba has an adventurous side that only exists amid the depths the ocean. The island also offers a thrill ride along its Mars-like desert. This is where cacti dominate its landscape and images of wishes sculpted out of rocks unravel years of secret legends.
De Palm Tours brought this wild experience to life and with Zaylon, our driver behind the wheel of a bright yellow truck we headed for the hills as the vehicle conquered every ounce of rugged terrain in its path.
Amid being jerked around and shielding our eyes from the dust kicked up by the vehicle’s wheels, many attractions were uncovered along the tracks. Some included picturesque views of the water crashing onto cliffs as well as an old natural bridge. Even historic remnants like an old small church and a stone-face building remain a constant reminder of Aruba’s rich heritage.
Much to my surprise, the end of the tour led us to a natural pool that was sheltered by large boulders, which barely blocked the Caribbean Sea's huge waves from splashing swimmers. As we soaked away our fears, it was the perfect remedy for the treacherous drive we just survived.
