With plans to open at least a half-dozen new hotels in major Asian markets, Spanish hotel group Melia is significantly increasing its footprint in the Asia-Pacific region.
Over the past five years, the company has added more than 30 hotels throughout Asia, a fivefold increase in its portfolio.
The news of Melia’s continued, ambitious expansion comes on the heels of an annual tour through the Asia-Pacific region by company executives.
During the tour, Gabriel Escarrer Jaume, Executive Vice President and CEO of Melia Hotels International, signed agreements for several new hotels with local partners, increasing Melia’s total Asia-Pacific portfolio to 45 properties.
“The size of this market, the strong organic growth we are seeing in China and Southeast Asia and the progressive growth in revenues in the region, lead us to predict that…the region will make a contribution as important to the company results as Cuba represented after its addition 30 years ago,” Escarrer said in a statement.
The long list of new Melia properties includes sites in Indonesia, China, Vietnam, Thailand, Malaysia, Mongolia, and Myanmar.
In Thailand for example, the company will open the Melia Chiang Mai, it’s first property in the country’s famous northern tourist region. There will also be a new Melia property in the capital Bangkok, to be called the Innside Bangkok Sukhumvit.
The newly inked deal for another Melia property in Vietnam will bring Melia Va Bi Mountain Retreat online. The property is located in the Vietnamese countryside west of Hanoi.

The state of Pahang, in Malaysia, will be the location of the new Melia Bukit Tinggi. The property there will look out onto the lush highlands surrounding Bukit Tinggi, the fourth most visited place in Malaysia and a destination renowned for its beautiful natural landscape and cool weather.
All of these new hotels join the brand’s existing properties in the region such as Melia Bangkok and Melia Jinan Hotel, as well as four other hotels in Vietnam.
The company’s substantial portfolio in the Asian region, both hotels in operation and those that are still under construction, now includes 16 properties in Indonesia, 10 in China, seven in Vietnam, four in Thailand, five in Malaysia and one in Mongolia and Myanmar.
