Resort Shorts: Smuggler’s Cove Resort and Marina Reopens After $500,000 Renovation
Hotel & Resort Tom Bastek January 03, 2015

Normally, a half a million dollar renovation wouldn’t seem like much. When the Cosmopolitan of Las Vegas was built for $3.5 Billion, the Tropicana was just completing a $180 Million renovation and that seemed like peanuts for a property that had over 1,600 rooms. Let’s put that in perspective here: Smuggler’s Cove has only 11 rooms and one suite. Their three-month hiatus and $500,000 renovation yielded fully renovated guestrooms as well as new food and beverage offerings and experiences.
Smugglers Cove and Marina is a boutique hotel and marina located in the upper Florida Keys in Islamorada, known as the Village of Islands. The guestrooms now offer new bedding and furnishings with an island-inspired décor, flat screen TV’s, Eco Botanics amenities and a kitchenette with a mini fridge, microwave, coffee maker and kitchenware. The suite has added a pull-out couch, two closets and a separate bathroom with dual sinks.
The food and beverage now include Honey Hole, a separated part of the marina that is fully stocked with over 300 fish. Guests can literally catch their fish right in the marina and then have it prepared for their meal that night. The Wheel House is open for lunch, dinner and late night offering up food and drink menus showcasing local seafood. Offering marina and bay views, the Buoy Bar offers nightly live entertainment, special events and happy hour specials. All of the venues are open to the public. Room service and complimentary breakfast are coming soon.
Smuggler’s cove has an 80-slip deep marina capable of handling up to 60 foot boats. They offer activities including scuba diving, snorkeling, eco tours, boat rentals, sport fishing as well as helicopter rides to Miami for additional excursions. The resort is located 75 miles from Miami International Airport in the upper Florida Keys.
