Since the world's first official wine spa uncorked in France’s Bordeaux region in 1999, everyone from oenophiles to brew aficionados have toasted the rejuvenating and healing powers of vinotherapy. Rather than simply dabbling with a vino-infused treatment or two, The SOMMA WineSPA at Fiesta Americana Grand Golf & Spa Resort in Los Cabos has gone full throttle as Mexico’s first spa to completely embrace the vinotherapy concept.

With its moniker nodding to Italy’s celebrated Somma Lombardo wine region and the Greek word for “body” (soma), this themed spa in the exclusive Cabo del Sol golf community has tapped into wine treatment aspects across the board. Guests glow from the spirit’s ability to generate feelings of youthfulness, relaxation and euphoria — much the same as vino’s impact when it’s quaffed, but with no potential for a hangover!

SOMMA’s concept of wine as a celebration is seen in the decor of areas where all stages of the therapeutic and relaxation process occur. This includes wine country-influenced ambience and colors, plus dark wood floors reminiscent of wine barrels.

Treatment products are also wine-based and hand selected wine tastings follow spa activities.

As a perfect pairing, the spa’s vibe blends wine therapy with a touch of Mexico. Therapies incorporate grape seed extract, an antioxidant seven times more powerful than Vitamin E. This “food for the skin” forms the basis for SOMMA WineSPA’s Chardonnay and Merlot amenity lines.

Red wines infused into treatments are produced in Baja California’s Valle de Guadalupe and Santo Tomas, while whites are imported from France and the Mediterranean region. Through professional fusions, grapes flow into the deepest layers of the skin, creating a balance between ancestral and contemporary therapies.

SOMMA sommeliers assist guests in selecting treatments geared to individual skin needs and therapy preferences. The signature Le Vin Chardonnay rejuvenates with polyphenol-rich products through a combination of lomi lomi, Swedish and deep-tissue techniques. Other decadent vino-based treatments include the Petite Champagne Massage, Merlot Exfoliation and Chardonnay Clay Body Wrap.

Other treatments fold in traditional therapies. The Native Hot Stone Massage incorporates Merlot Oil from Baja California that’s concocted to induce a deep state of mental and physical relaxation. The Hydra-Wine facial begins with a grape seed cleansing milk, followed by the aromas of each product applied to penetrate the skin and enhance hydration.

As a “dessert” of sorts, sommeliers present post-treatment wine to extend the afterglow.

SOMMA also offers private pairing sessions that match gourmet appetizers with selections from the resort’s expansive wine list.

Couples can splurge with sessions in beach cabanas or a tandem spa haven where hot tub and steam room seduce as an intimate sanctuary. And while the tone also skews toward romance, up to a dozen can indulge in SOMMA WineSPA’s Barefoot Elegance Experience that progresses from the traditional grape stomp in barrels on the beach to a reflexology massage illuminated by a blanket of stars, candles and torches.

The extravagance unfolds as a butler takes footwear while leading participants to chaise loungers on the beach. A personal masseuse guides guests into individual small wine barrels for stomping wine grapes in the time-honored tradition of the Vendimia Spanish wine harvest.

The stomping process produces an extract rich on phenols from grape skin and seeds that contain anti-oxidant and exfoliate properties. As a finale, euphoric folks enjoy a wine tasting of three Valle de Guadalupe vinos paired with unique canapes carefully selected by the WineSPA sommelier.
