Weekend Getaways: Late Summer Deals
Hotel & Resort Scott Laird August 16, 2016

As the peak summer travel season begins to wind down and school returns to session in many parts of the country, there are hotels and resorts across the country that are offering discounts and value-added packages to late summer travelers. Cities, in particular, tend to empty out during this period as many of their denizens flee to the country for end-of-the-season weekend escapes, and it’s a good time to enjoy smaller crowds and better deals.
Here are a few packages highlighting city experiences in some of the country’s most exciting urban areas.
Kiss and Make Up in the Windy City
National Kiss & Make Up Day is Aug. 25, and the Fairmont Chicago, Millennium Park offers a Romantic Escape Package for those looking to get in on the action. The package includes overnight accommodations (which are well-located in the Loop Area close to its eponymous park as well as plenty of nightlife and dining options). Upon returning to the room after a night in the city, guests will enjoy a custom-made assortment of 10 different decadent treats, made fresh each day in a collection called the Chocolate Bar.
For an extra memorable stay, request a Fairmont Signature Room, which are on higher floors and boast commanding views of The Loops parks, landmarks, and of course, Lake Michigan. The package starts at $239 and is subject to availability.
Celebrate Love and Inner Peace in Gotham
The Chatwal, the Beaux Arts landmark in the heart of Manhattan that is a member of The Luxury Collection is offering two packages for guests wanting to get away during the dog days of August. The Finding Inner Peace Package promotes existential rest and relaxation and includes a one-on-one meditation coaching session and a customized Red Door Spa Signature Massage and Aromatherapy, post-spa tea and a take home bath salt amenity plus daily full breakfast for one. That package is available from $684 for a minimum two night stay through Aug. 31.

For those who prefer to luxuriate in pairs, the Celebrating Love package offers the same benefits for two from $922 per night through Aug. 31. The hotel, originally constructed in 1905 by legendary Manhattan architect Stanford White, was restored and relaunched as a Luxury Collection property in 2010. With only 76 rooms in a city of 8 million, it’s a great place to escape inwards.
Enjoy Seasonal Calm in Beantown
Boston clears out in August as everyone heads to the Cape on weekends before the foliage turns. When fall colors do come, rates in the region skyrocket, so it’s a good time to get in on Boston before everybody else does. The Hotel Commonwealth is offering the City Escape package, which includes an overnight stay, room upgrade, $100 dining certificate, free Wi-Fi, valet parking, and late checkout from $299 per night.
The hotel completed a top-to-bottom renovation of guest rooms and public spaces in 2014 and 2015 and is the only official hotel of the Boston Red Sox. Located opposite Fenway Park, baseball fans can book rooms and suites with a view of the ball park.
