A California man was fatally shot while playing Pokemon Go at one of San Francisco's most iconic tourist attractions.
The Associated Press reported 20-year-old Calvin Riley - a pitcher for the San Joaquin Delta College Mustangs, according to the Mercury News - was playing the popular mobile game with his friend Saturday night in the city's Fisherman's Wharf area when he was shot in the back by an unknown assailant.
The U.S. Park Police told the AP that the shooting occured around 10 p.m. local time at the Aquatic Park near Ghiradelli Square.
"From what we know there was no confrontation," family friend John Kirby told KGO-TV. "There was nothing said back and forth. It was just senseless, just came up and shot in the back and ran away for nothing."
Investigators believe there were witnesses to the shooting because of where it took place. However the motive remains a mystery, with U.S. Park Police detective Sgt. Robert Jansing noting that the gunman made no attempt to rob Riley.
This isn't the first time a Pokemon Go player has been the target of a crime. Since the game launched last month, there have been a handful of incidents in which players were attacked or robbed while playing the augmented reality game.
Nonetheless, the game has added to the draw of parks and tourist attractions where players visit in hopes of catching Pokemon creatures.
