A late-night shipyard fire in the Netherlands has left Emerald Waterways’ newest ship, the Emerald Belle, with significant damage, according to a press release.
The Emerald Belle was under construction in the Den Breejen Shipyard and was due to launch in April, the release said. The firefighting system onboard the ship was not yet operational.

The shipyard’s owner was alerted to the fire at 12:30 a.m. Sunday, according to Glen Moroney, chairman of the Scenic Group.
“Despite the efforts of firefighters, who were quickly at the scene, the damage is significant,” Moroney said. “We are grateful and relieved that nobody was onboard at the time and most importantly, there were no injuries to any shipyard worker or firefighters.”

Authorities have said the damage could delay the April launch. Emerald Waterways is reviewing all bookings to figure out how to accommodate guests either on other Emerald ships or on the cruise line’s sister company, Scenic, the release said.
Scenic also had a ship under construction in the Den Breejen Shipyard, but it only suffered minor damage to some exterior paint.
