On Sunday, a tourist in Thailand was bitten after she tripped while approaching a crocodile in an effort to take a selfie.
According to The Associated Press, 47-year-old French tourist Benetulier Lesuffleur was visiting the Khao Yai National Park in the Sankamphaeng Mountain Range of Thailand when she saw the aforementioned crocodile on the edge of a pond.
National Park, Wildlife and Plant Conservation Department head Thanya Netithammakul reported that Lesuffleur approached the water to take a selfie with the animal, but tripped and fell just a few feet away. The crocodile then leaped forward and bit her leg.
“She wanted to take a selfie with the crocodile who was lying down near a stream,” park official Kanchit Srinoppawan told The Independent. “I guess that she wanted to see it for real.”
Photos provided by The Independent showed men carrying an injured woman out of the woods with bandages on her knee. Another image showed a park ranger pointing at a pool of blood while standing next to a sign which read “Danger Crocodile No Swimming.”
There were reportedly multiple signs warning tourists about crocodiles in the area.
The animal which attacked Lesuffleur was a Siamese crocodile, an endangered species not known for attacking humans. The reptiles typically can be found in Southeast Asia and usually resides in fresh water.
