Passengers on a United Airlines flight were in for a rough ride when the casing around one of the plane’s engines ripped apart during a journey over the Pacific Ocean Tuesday.
According to Reuters.com, United Flight 1175 was traveling from San Francisco International Airport to Honolulu International Airport when the engine cover on the Boeing 777 tore off midflight, causing turbulence onboard for the remainder of the trip.
The pilots of the flight declared an emergency due to a vibration in the right engine, but the plane was able to land safely in Hawaii with no passengers or crew members reporting injuries.

“I thought we were going to die and hoped that my kids knew that I loved them. It was horrible,” a passenger on the plane told ABCNews.com. “The flight attendants were really professional, but they were scared. You could tell from their face.”

United spokesman Charles Hobart said there were more than 370 people onboard at the time of the incident. Officials from the Federal Aviation Administration announced they will investigate the incident.
In December, a Thomas Cook Airlines flight attempting to take off from an airport in Cuba was forced to abort after one of the engines exploded just as the front wheel of the plane was coming off the runway.
