In the world of small group adventure, tour operator G Adventures says the five top destinations for 2014 are Indonesia (pictured above), Ecuador, Morocco, Turkey and Rwanda.
Based on performance in 2013 and trends in traveler preferences, the Toronto-based operator is projecting its strongest growth in these areas for its leading edge adventure-seeking customers.
Thanks to a strong uptick in interest of the Indonesia that lies beyond the beaches of Bali, G Adventures doubled departures on its trips to Indonesia and then added seven new programs for 2014, including a nine-day Best of Java package in its Classic series, priced from $1,149 per person. It travels from Jakarta to Sanur.
G’s visitors to the mainland of Ecuador grew by 53 percent year over year, so G expanded its offerings for 2014 with a nine-day program in its Comfort series called Ecuador Amazon, Hot Springs and Volcanoes, priced from $1,999 per person.
G Adventures’ business to Morocco have expanded by 159 percent in 2013 so far and the company is expecting to double its business to the country for 2014, so it is adding some new programs, including a 15-day trip from Casablanca to Marrakech called Morocco, Sahara and Beyond. The Comfort trip is priced from $2,599 per person.
The company sees Turkey pushing into the center of the adventure tourism map as an alternative culture destination for travelers who prefer to steer clear of the Middle East. Turkey is planning major commemorative events for its 100-year anniversary of its establishment as a republic.
G saw a 42 percent increase in travel to Turkey in 2013 and responded with four new trips for 2014. One is called Sailing Turkey - Fetihye to Bodrum, which features a sail on the Turkish Riviera. The program is priced at $1,899.
Rwanda is seeing more traffic and interest in its rare mountain gorillas and chimpanzees and the country is looking for a boost after its inclusion in a cross-border visa program that allows travelers to visit Rwanda, Kenya and Uganda on a single visa.
The program will take effect Jan. 1, 2014.
G Adventures is entering the country for the first time with its nine-day Rwanda and Uganda Gorilla and Chimp Adventure priced from $4,999 including permits for gorilla, monkey and chimpanzee treks and all national park fees.
