What’s Booking: Agent Says Iceland and Nicaragua Are Hot

Becky Veith, an agent with Travel Experts in Erie, Pa., has noticed an uptick in business to two very divergent destinations: Iceland and Nicaragua.
“People are taking advantage of Iceland because it’s a good buy,” said Veith. “There are glaciers and hot springs and really beautiful scenery with great little villages --and the people are really friendly,” she said.
Her clients recently took advantage of inexpensive Icelandair one-way tickets from the U.K. to the U.S. for the return of a one-way U.S.-U.K. transatlantic voyage aboard Cunard Line’s Queen Mary 2.
“They wanted to stay in Paris but the flights were like $3,000 a person to fly back to the U.S. on a one-way ticket,” Veith said, adding that the Icelandair ticket from the U.K. back to the U.S. was in the $700 to $800 range with a stopover in Iceland.
“So they’re staying five days and doing a self-drive around Iceland,” Veith said, rather than staying in Paris.
She’s also booked a family on an Iceland vacation with a heavy emphasis on the country’s back roads with hiking and biking.
Business to Nicaragua is also on the rise, Veith said. “People are always looking for the latest and greatest thing,” she said, adding that Nicaragua “is getting hotter by the minute.”
With a topography similar to Costa Rica’s, Nicaragua is a “beautifully lush destination that’s basically been undiscovered until now.”
In particular, Veith has booked a healthy number of clients at Mukul, a new property on the country’s Emerald coast near the Costa Rican Border.
The brainchild of businessman Carlos Pellas, Mukul’s rooms and suites all feature private pools. The resort, whose spa won Virtuoso’s award for best spa, also features an 18-hole golf course.
“It’s a beautiful new luxury hotel with beautiful views,” said Veith. “The government is really working hard to develop tourism.”
