Google Translate Pulls Back The Curtain on Japan
Travel Technology Gabe Zaldivar January 27, 2017

The world continues to become more accessible thanks to technology.
The Google blog reports that there is a new innovation that will make traveling through Japan infinitely easier for visitors who may not read the local language.
Using the Google Translate mobile app, you can glance over wording and see the English translation.
When it comes to visiting a country that uses a completely different structure, relying on kanji, walking around town can be absolutely confusing. Instead of having to carefully map everything ahead of time or hoping a local official will set you in the right direction, a clever twist of modern innovation turns befuddling words into complete clarity.

We covered the budding technology back in 2015, which incorporates Quest Visual’s Word Lens.
If this sounds like some form of magic you have to wait decades to use, it isn’t:

It gets better because it won’t bog down your data: “With Word Lens, you just need to fire up the Translate app, point your camera at the Japanese text, and the English translations will appear overlaid on your screen—even if you don't have an Internet or data connection.”
Now, you can hold your head high as you maneuver the local public transportation or peruse a menu at the restaurant you had your heart set on trying before your trip.
While we always suggest learning at least a modicum of the local language before you travel, this is the kind of app that makes travel the joy we always want it to be.
