JOURNEYS International to Explore Sumatra in 12-Day Tour
Vacation Packages June 02, 2013
After something of a hiatus from the U.S. market, Indonesia (and not just Bali) is beginning again to show up in many new tours. The 12-day Savoring Sumatra, for example, is a new JOURNEYS International tour that will debut in July 2014. Sumatra is much less developed than Bali or Java and offers a completely distinct travel experience thanks to its rainforest, cuisine, cultural diversity and its volcanic history.
Travelers will embark on a pre-dawn ascent of Mt. Sibayak, explore Batak Toba traditional houses, float on the largest volcanic lake in the world and trek through miles of dense jungle that is home to approximately 175 species of mammals, 320 species of birds, and 190 reptiles and amphibians. This trip can also be combined with an extension to Krakatoa, the site of the most violent volcanic event in recent history.
In the first 11 months of 2012, 7.28 million international tourists visited Indonesia, up 5 percent over the same period in the previous year. The U.S. travel market has been part of the growth according to the latest statistics available. U.S. arrivals grew more than 7 percent in 2011.
