There is a certain exotic allure to Southeast Asia. We've spent a few anniversaries in this section of the globe, and we can personally attest to its romantic appeal. Next time you're taking a vacation with your special someone, try one of these romantic and adventurous destinations in Southeast Asia. It's bound to be an occasion to remember!
Gili Meno, Indonesia
It's not called the Honeymoon Island for nothing. Sitting in between Bali and Lombok Islands in Indonesia, it's easy to understand why newlyweds would choose this secluded and quiet paradise. The smallest and least-developed of the three Gili Islands, the island only takes about an hour to circumnavigate by foot. Spend hours relaxing on the beach, sipping cocktails, and watching the gentle waves lap across the sand. You'll likely enjoy the spectacular scene without another soul passing by. Finish the day by grabbing a meal at any of the local warungs right on the beach as you admire the setting sun.
Bohol, the Philippines
The Island of Bohol in the southern Philippines is home to the Chocolate Hills and the adorable tarsiers. We stayed at the Amorita Resort to celebrate our first wedding anniversary and loved every minute of it. We spent much of our time sipping cocktails and enjoying the ripple-free horizon of the infinity pool overlooking the expansive ocean. Outside of the resort there were plenty of adventures to be had, whether it was exploring the beach, coming face-to-face with tarsiers, or enjoying the one-of-a-kind local scenery.
Phuket, Thailand
Phuket is one of Thailand's most popular destinations, but for good reason. The beaches here are some of the most beautiful in the world, with picture-perfect white sand and tranquil turquoise water. In Phuket, you'll also have your choice of five-star accommodation options and world-class dining, the utmost in luxury for the most romantic of occasions.
Halong Bay, Vietnam
We weren’t planning on going to this iconic destination when we first arrived in Vietnam. But time and time again, we kept hearing travelers say we had to take a cruise through Halong Bay while we had the chance. Needless to say, we are glad we took their advice! Halong Bay might be touristy, but if you visit during the off-season and receive beautiful weather, it might just be one of your most memorable travel experiences yet. We recommend a multi-day cruise through the Bay to fully appreciate the spectacular scenery. Be aware that not all tour companies are created equal. We went with Handspan’s Indochina Sails and had a splendid time.
Ubud, Bali
In the beautiful serenity of the rice terraces and Balinese countryside, in the practice of traditional dance and the fine arts, in the quaint stone pavements that guide your feet past lush gardens and temple walls, Ubud exudes a magical energy that will whisk you away. Don't miss an outdoor traditional dance performance, or the opportunity to rent a scooter and explore the quiet countryside. Get a couple's massage, recharge in a few yoga classes, and savor the quiet and charming experience that Ubud provides.
We haven't been everywhere in Southeast Asia, but these are easily our top choices for the ultimate romantic getaway. Have you visited this region of the globe? What places would you recommend for a romantic and adventurous escape?
