If you've ever visited our kind neighbors to the north (or are planning a visit), then you know it's a vast country. There's a lot to do and see and a lot of ground to cover.

For the most part, tourists will hit the highlights, and with good reason. Cities such as Montreal, Toronto, and Vancouver are well worth a visit, each lovely in their own right.

But by no means do these cities represent the entirety of Canada, so whether you're a repeat visitor or planning your first venture to the Great White North with Air Canada, here are some places to check out.

The Maritimes. Nova Scotia, New Brunswick and Prince Edward Island make up what is known as the Maritimes, and are conveniently located just north and to the east of Maine. Each of the provinces is worthy of exploration in its own right. When in Nova Scotia, head north to Cape Breton and drive the Cabot Trail that offers stunning coastal views. Lunenburg, meanwhile, looks like a postcard with its historic homes that line the harbor. New Brunswick to the west offers such spectacular sites as the scenic St. John River Valley. Between the two provinces sits the Bay of Fundy, a rugged yet beautiful stretch of dramatic cliffs and home to the world's most extreme tides (water can rise by 48 feet each day). Prince Edward Island round out the list. Foodies and book lovers will both find something to celebrate: The island was named the second best food getaway in the world by Zagat in 2012, and serves as the setting of "Anne of Green Gables."

Thompson Okanagan (British Columbia). With more than 200 wineries in 124 square miles, the Thompson Okanagan region is ideal for those looking for a leisurely road trip with plenty of places to stop and enjoy the sites or sample some of the region's best varietals. It's also home to the Helmcken Falls and the only inland rainforest in the world.

Banff and Lake Louise (Alberta). Most people think of skiing when they think of Banff, and rightly so. But there's more to this mountain paradise than winter sports. Summer visitors can paddle Lake Louise, soak their cares away in the famous Banff Hot Springs or live their own version of "City Slickers" by traversing Banff National Park on horseback. And a few hours in the car brings you to the Canadian Badlands.

Laurentian Mountains (Quebec). Just an hour north of Montreal sits a veritable outdoor wonderland. The Laurentians are stunning no matter which time of year you visit. Winter offers up the chance for all sorts of snow activities, while fall holds the promise of leaf-peeping; with spring comes sugar shacks, and summer means all sorts of activities from hiking and camping to lazy picnics in the sun. When you've had your fill of nature, check out some of the many villages reminiscent of the Alps.

Saskatoon (Saskatchewan). Located pretty much smack dab in between Canada's Atlantic and Pacific Coasts, Saskatoon embodies the prairie spirit. Surrounded by wheat fields upon wheat fields, this up-and-coming city is becoming known for its culture (think theater and music festivals), as well as its proximity to an abundance of outdoor activities, especially such winter sports as kick-sledding and cross-country skiing. The fact that it straddles a river means that not only can you explore the city by foot or by bike, but renting a kayak isn't out of the question. If you have extra time, take a trip out to Little Manitou Lake. Known as Canada's Dead Sea, this lake offers mineral-rich waters known for their healing powers.
